Just a few short months ago, all eyes were on one of the world's biggest sporting events, the Olympics. Indonesian netizens swarmed the Internet when Indonesia’s Didit Hediprasetyo-designed Olympics kit was released, with many eager to share their opinions. Now, it's time for the Paralympics—an equally prestigious global event that highlights the extraordinary talents of athletes with disabilities. And this time, another renowned Indonesian designer, Didiet Maulana, known for his traditional and ethnic design touches, has crafted the kits for Indonesia's Paralympic athletes.
Didiet Maulana's design is based on the concept of "Sandya Niskala," a term from Sanskrit that roughly translates to "unity" and "strength." This design embodies the spirit of togetherness and resilience that Indonesian athletes carry with them. It draws inspiration from Indonesia's diverse yet united archipelago, aligning with the national philosophy of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika, which means "Unity in Diversity."
The uniforms incorporate geometric patterns that resemble the rolling waves of the ocean, symbolizing Indonesia’s nature as a vast island nation. These motifs also represent the perseverance and optimism that characterize the athletes. Didiet has further embedded elements of the Garuda bird, the national symbol, through feather-like patterns, and incorporated ikat weaving motifs to represent Indonesia’s rich cultural heritage.
Color choices in the "Sandya Niskala" kit are intentional and symbolic. The prominent use of red and white honors the Indonesian flag, reflecting values of bravery and purity. Golden yellow accents are included to symbolize majesty and glory, adding a touch of elegance and pride.
By incorporating these meaningful symbols and colors, Didiet aims to inspire motivation and unity among the athletes, enhancing their fighting spirit as they compete on the world stage. The "Sandya Niskala" design is not just a uniform; it represents Indonesia’s collective spirit and cultural pride, making a statement of solidarity and strength as the athletes represent their nation at the Paris 2024 Paralympics.
