From Passion to Possibility: Jakarta Doodle Fest’s Role in Artist Empowerment

Jakarta Doodle Fest (JDF) is a celebration of visual arts ranging from animation and illustration to graphic design, with a unique emphasis on the importance of Intellectual Property (IP) for every creator. Now in its second year, the festival, organized by TFR News, aims to empower artists by exploring how they can benefit economically from their creations. This year’s JDF, held from November 1-3 at Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM), Jakarta, takes on the theme Art to Cart, highlighting the possibilities as well as the significance of turning creative works into viable sources of income.

With activities like speaker sessions, workshops, and an art market, JDF gives young artists and enthusiasts a chance to interact with prominent visual creators. These creators will be sharing their experiences and selling IP-based products such as books, comics, illustrated characters, t-shirts, keychains, and stickers. The festival offers a rare opportunity for participants to not only learn directly from experts in the field but also to see how visual art can be transformed into business ventures.

One of the festival’s standout events this year is Moonboy & His Starguide: The Musical, a live performance inspired by Varsam Kurnia’s illustration series. This 45-minute musical follows the journey of a character searching for their place in the universe and is brought to life with visual storytelling, music, and dynamic choreography. The show, produced in collaboration with Galeri Indonesia Kaya and ADPRO, aims to immerse audiences in themes of self-discovery and resilience, bridging visual art and performance in a powerful way.

In addition to exhibitions and performances, JDF also emphasizes education, especially for young creatives. Through the Art School Roadshow, held in October as a pre-event, students from various universities were introduced to the fundamentals of theater production—from set design to marketing. Led by professionals like Adri Pradipta and Ursula S. Gayatri, the roadshow’s classes gave aspiring artists practical skills they can apply in the creative industry, including insights on stage management, costume and makeup, and branding.

JDF’s open, interactive format invites visitors to explore the world of art, learn from established creators, and engage with IP in a way that makes it relevant to their personal creative journeys. With free entry for exhibitions and registration at bit.ly/jdf2024visitors, the festival offers an inclusive experience for young art lovers looking to deepen their understanding of visual arts and explore new ways to channel their creativity into the professional world.
